How important is MOOP removal at Burning Man?
Removing MOOP is absolutely essential at Burning Man. The “Leave No Trace” principle is one of the 10 core principles that all participants must follow. The playa environment is extremely fragile, and any foreign materials left behind can have a detrimental impact. If you don’t thoroughly remove every last bit of MOOP from your camp area, you risk serious consequences. The Burning Man organizers conduct extensive post-event inspections and publish a detailed MOOP Map showing which camps did a good job versus those that fell short. Camps that fail the MOOP test may not be invited back the following year. This is because leaving behind any foreign materials, even organic ones, goes against the core “Leave No Trace” principle. The playa environment is extremely fragile, and any MOOP left behind can have a negative impact. Properly cleaning up your camp area is an essential responsibility that all Burning Man participants must take very seriously.
